Glenn Bautista was an artist who people would describe as “drowning in visions.” His abstract pieces are that of something that came straight out of a dream. They are enigmatic, fluid, captivating, and thought-provoking. Upon seeing his art, one is almost able to experience the artist’s spiritual revelations and visions from God.

The artist often took inspiration from various aspects of his life such as his family, faith, and philosophy. One painting entitled New Earth, was featured in the cover of Art+ Magazine’s April/May 2024 issue. This was one of those pieces that were inspired by his faith and the scriptures. The Bible passage he took inspiration from was Revelation 21:1 that says “Then I saw “a new heaven and a new earth,” for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and there was no longer any sea.” Glenn painted an image of what seems to be a landscape in the process of transformation. It is dynamic, as if each part is going through constant destruction and reconstruction. The agents of change are evident though curved and flowy brush strokes in contrast to the geometric lines of the field. Despite all the chaos, there is still a sense of hope as to what this “new Earth” will be after the dust settles in.

In 1974, Glenn Bautista was awarded as one of the 13 artists along with Tony Perez and Nestor Vinluan. No matter which artistic medium he used, he was able to break those concepts down and illustrate a unique perspective that is able to mystify and awe people. In a way, Glenn was an artist ahead of his time and redefined what Philippine art could be. “Glenn Bautista’s Approach to artmaking is an invaluable one. It is about constant experimentation, restless exploration, and unending reinvention. How many artists can you say that, too, transcend convenient categorization? Looking at Bautista’s body of works now, you get the erroneous impression that they are creations of multiple artists. In this aspect, Glenn Bautista stands as a unique and singular figure in Philippine art.” (Igan D’Bayan)
