about the

artist

Teofilo Y. Mendoza Jr., affectionately known as T.Y.M., was an artist who truly lived and breathed art. Throughout his life, he created thousands of drawings and paintings, each infused with inspiration drawn from his experiences, environment, and faith. T.Y.M. had a remarkable ability to translate the richness of his life into the language of art, making each work not just a piece of visual beauty but a reflection of his inner world. He had a way of capturing movements into something sacred. His emotional sketches weren’t just drawings—they were little windows into the soul.

T.Y.M.’s abstract works are bold, vibrant, and almost psychedelic, to say the least. There is a carefree nature to them. While other artists tend to focus on perfection, T.Y.M. is the type of artist who simply lets his creativity flow. He allows the lines, squiggles, and colors to speak for themselves. They are a testament to the beauty that he saw in the world and the passion he had for art. T.Y.M. followed no set path, constantly evolving, constantly exploring. His art became a celebration of everyday Filipino life, filled with color, spirit, and honest joy.

In honor of the late artist Teofilo Y. Mendoza Jr., Gallery Genesis is proud to present “Teofilo Y. Mendoza’s Expressionist Folklore,” a work by Igan D’Bayan and edited by Cid Reyes. This art book celebrates one of the greatest yet underrated artists of his time, showcasing biographical snippets that highlight his life and artistic inspiration. It features a curated selection of T.Y.M.’s finest creations, offering a comprehensive look at his remarkable oeuvre.
